Background
Originally from New Zealand, my first exposure to the professional sailing industry was as boat captain of the highly successful Swan 60-01 Highland Fling in 1994. This role encompassed all aspects of boat, crew and race management—and gave me my first taste of racing navigation in the early days of GPS and as PCs were becoming more common on board for navigation and performance.
In 2000, I joined B&G as Product Manager for the high end H2000 product lines and market, including sales, marketing and event customer support. This continued my development in applying technology in the high end racing sector.
What I Do
Since 2003, as the owner of Field Yachting Ltd, I provide professional sailing and yacht racing navigation services, electronics and instrument systems consultation, performance and data analysis, and expert training on Expedition Navigation Software—the world's leading racing navigation software.
Field Yachting was the first company to sell and support Expedition Navigation Software in 2005. Working closely with Expedition Marine to enhance and improve the product, I am recognised as one of the world's leading experts in its deployment and use. I provide training, support, and webinars based around the use of Expedition.
I also work closely with other specialist suppliers of technology to the industry, such as SailingPerformance, and collaborate with A+T Instruments, Faro Advanced Systems, Pixel Sur Mer, and specialist installers such as Diverse and Osprey Technical.
I have developed some software tools to meet my needs when sailing, and have made these available to the sailing community.
Location
Based in Lymington, UK, I work with clients globally, from navigating in major offshore races to remote coaching sessions via video call. I help sailors achieve better results and get more enjoyment from their time on the water – whether that's demystifying instruments and software or adding deeper knowledge to their sailing.
